I immediately broke out into a full body sweat which has not stopped. It has been so hot & humid 24 hours a day…difficult to imagine when living in snow & cold. Audrey picked Ed, Sue & me up at the airport and drove us to our B&B Fare Suisse (Swiss House) downtown Papeete. She escorted me to my Maupiti room with double bed & bath. I finally went to bed at 2:15 AM and could not believe I was actually here. The roosters began crowing at 3:15 AM and did not stop until evening. Lots of tropical bird songs were intermixed with the roosters’ at daylight. Paradise, yes! Walked to the local grocery store “Champion” to buy breakfast and walked along the Papeete harbor to eat it. The Tahitians were very friendly with big smiles and spoke to me in French all along my walk…I felt so welcomed. Many beautiful women & men, never ending eye candy. The children were even adorable. Went to the huge local market “Le Marche” (lay mar-shay) to find fellow passenger Gail from Austin, TX. We had been in contact on the internet for over 8 months. The Japanese tale of the bush warbler, interpreted by me. Translator’s Note: The parts in which I read should be pronounced as “Ho Ho Ho (“O” as in Ghost) and Kekkyo as “Kek” the “e” pronounced as in Gecko. And “kyo” pronounced similar to Key (emphasis on the K) and Yo, as in “Yo-yo”. I have not said them like that because it sounded better to use American English phonetics viz. switching mid-stream to Japanese. Whilst, there are many versions of “The Bush Warbler’s Home” I have opted for the version, generally believed to be the oldest from the Iwate prefecture. Closed Captioned

The train journey was uneventful apart from the view of 2 trains full of army tanks and machinery trying to keep peace in the Muslim south of Thailand. Obviously the gentle approach! After arriving at the train station on the Thai border we bumped into 2 other English couples wandering the station looking equally lost and clearly the only other Westerners in sight. We quickly befriended them and walked in the midday sun to the Malaysian border which incidently was mostly closed due to it being a Friday – a Muslim holiday!!! At the border we picked up 2 taxis to carry us all the way to the ferry port at Kuala Besut where we took a speed boat to the Perhentian Islands – in particular Palau Kecil (small island). The island was stunning with bright white sand backed by thick jungle and only a small amount of development so no roads, pavements, little alcohol or electricity for half the day (the hottest part 1-6pm!). What the island lacked in development it made up for in crazy wildlife such as huge monitor lizards, ghekkos with 2 tails, flying squirrels, bats in the restaurants, an eagle which lived on the beach and a plethora of amazing tropical fish and sea life including giant stingray, bamboo sharks, trigger fish, blow fish, morrays eels and turtles.
