A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Taman Negara, Malaysia by TravelPod blogger Angela_louise titled “Jungle, monkeys, leeches and other creatures” Angela_louise’s travel blog entry: “We took the train from Kota Balu at 6.30am, which involved getting up at 4.30 so we were very tired. The train is called the Jungle Railway because it goes right through the jungle, so we were surrounded by trees for the whole of the 9 hour ride. It was quite hot on the train but the time passed reasonably quickly. We arrived in Jerantut and found a hotel. That night we had lots of lovely curry and murtabak for dinner and I had a chocolate roti canai. We love Malaysia food! That night, just as we were about to go to sleep, a strange looking bug crawled over me. I tried to squash it but it refused to die. David rolled an aerosol can over it and it burst, splattering fresh blood everywhere, which we thought was possibly ours. About 10 minutes later, another one appeared, and then another. We wondered where they were coming from and so I lifted up the mattress, and there were loads of them, all sleeping in the creases and crawling around. It was horrible! We immediately went to reception and changed rooms to a nicer one with a TV and air con (which we normally can’t afford) and they told us they were bed bugs. Lovely. They were the biggest bed bugs I have ever seen. We were surprised, because it was a clean and new hotel. After a bug-free sleep we woke up and took the bus to

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Cartagena, Colombia by TravelPod blogger Cannons titled “Colombia’s Ciudad Perdida” Cannons’s travel blog entry: “Andy here, back from the jungle after my adventure to the Lost City, deep in the Colombian rain forest. I was keen to meet up with Cate as soon as possible again after the machete incident the night before I went on the trek and am glad to say that the team are back together in Cartegena, hurray!! We’re got a couple of days R&R here before we start the journey west and north to Panama – just enough time for me to write about my jungle adventure. My trip started with a 3 hour journey in a home made land cruiser, which took us along the coast and then deep into the jungle for some excellent off-road driving. We finally got to a village, where me and the seven others in the group had a quick bite to eat for lunch and then set off just after 1pm for a 4 hour hike to our first camp site. Within a few minutes it dawned on me that this was no casual Sunday stroll on Hampstead Heath. It took just 15 minutes until we had waded through rivers up to our waist and had seen not one but two species of poisonous snake – “muy peligroso” (very dangerous!) our guide Xavier kept telling us!!! (Cate would have had a fit!) Despite the danger lurking in the bushes and grass around us it was almost impossible to keep your eyes on the ground because the route was so breathtakingly beautiful. The jungle was so dense and lush green

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Quorn, Australia by TravelPod blogger Flagwavingpom titled “A local town for local people” Flagwavingpom’s travel blog entry: “Another early start took us south from Coober Pedy through Glendambo whose human population of just thirty people, is somewhat dwarfed by its population of around two million flies. My experience of South Australia so far has driven me to believe that Australian people may have at some point been driven mad by the heat, as who in their right mind would voluntarily live in the middle of a desert with an extremely limited water supply, unable to even step outside their homes without being swarmed by flies. The group had learned to dread our outdoor lunches as the flies get in your nose, mouth and eyes no matter how much you flail your arms around in protest. You know those ridiculous stereotypical Aussie hats with the corks hanging down, I’d have paid any amount of money for one of those at this point! There are several salt lakes in South Australia, something I’ve never seen before and on the way to Quorn we stopped at Lake Hart, one of the smaller ones but it still stretches about as far as you can see. Around 6 months ago Queensland endured weeks of flooding and because of that the salt lakes here currently have water in them. It takes about 3 months for the water to soak through the earth and travel down the country and somehow it all ends up here. The ground is thick with salt where the

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to La Selva, Costa Rica by TravelPod blogger Djsanscrainte titled “La Selva Biological Reserve” Djsanscrainte’s travel blog entry: “Hola, so I guess I’m a little behind on this one, but here goes. This weekend is the weekend I had conflicting field trips, my Marine Biology field trip was going to Puerto Viejo and snorkeling in Caljuita. They were supposed to scuba dive but once again the weather was bad and ended up not scuba diving. I was supposed to go on the Marine Biology field trip but I ended up switching them around, after much hassle and arguing with Louise (the guy in charge or transportation and what not). But I finally was able to go to La Selva Biological Research Station with my Tropical Ecology class. Wow, I am glad I was able to do that, not only did it free up next weekend when Andrew and Karl are coming down but it was also probably one of the best weekends I have had so far. It was amazing; it is a strictly protected park bordering a very large national park, Braulio Carrillo National Park, in the center of Costa Rica. When we arrived to the research station right away we could see at least 10 different types of birds in the small clearing near the station and such. After we had a little intro and rules session from the guide, we ate lunch and started on our first hike. Before our hike though, a few of us rented some nice binoculars which were very helpful. In order to leave the station and lodging area

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Kinabatangan River, Malaysia by TravelPod blogger Jimandnat titled “Uncle Tan’s Jungle Camp” Jimandnat’s travel blog entry: “So…..we arrived at the base and after a lovely Malay lunch of various curries and rice we set off. We drove for about an hour and for the vast majority of the journey all we could see for miles around were palm plantations which was pretty scary. But then we arrived at the Kinabatangan River and it began to get exciting. There were eight of us in our group and we all boarded the boat and set off down the river. On the way to the camp we saw two stork-billed kingfishers and a troop of macaque monkeys. We arrived at camp and you could see on all the trees around the watermark where the recent floodwaters had risen to, and it must have been 7 feet up the trees. The camp itself was a collection of wooden rooms on stilts connected by a raised wooden boardwalk. Once ensconced in our accommodation we had tea and after an hour or so it got dark and we got ready for our first trip – the night cruise. So we set off and straight away we saw a Brahminy Kite sleeping on a tree branch, but he awoke and flew off before long. It was so dark I don’t know how the guides spotted everything – but we saw lots of beautiful wildlife. They illuminated everything for us with a torch. The highlights were the Buffy Fish Owl – which we got really close to, and didn’t seem too scared – but kind of arched its wings back in a

Bravely, we left Adelaide and the pacific ocean behind us, looking for adventures in the enormous Australian desert. We took a backpackers’ bus to the Capital of the desert – Alice Springs – in a two days drive of 1500 km (!). As we got deeper into the desert, we realized it wasn’t exactly as we expected… First, it has a lot of vegetation ; Second, it’s completely red! And third – no Kangaroos… except the ones squashed on the road icon sad ..in the desert, you cant remember your name... Noayanivs photos around Cairns, Australia We spent the night at Coober Pidi, which is a very unique town: It exists for one cause, and one cause alone – Opal mining. 50% of the population there lives underground! They build their houses under the ground while searching for Opal (a very special gem stone). Above the ground, the town looks dusty and deserted with a lot of tin shacks, just like Hura… icon smile ..in the desert, you cant remember your name... Noayanivs photos around Cairns, Australia We slept there at an underground hostel, just like the locals, which is located near the Opal mining museum. After the interesting tour at the museum, we enjoyed a great pizza dinner with our group members, all included in the price. The morning started early, as we witnessed the amazing sunrise from the “Break-aways” range. From there we crossed the border to the Northern Territory state, just before our bus began making strange noises. We stopped in a resting area beside the

A TripAdvisor™ TripWow slideshow of a travel blog to Khao Sok, Thailand by TravelPod blogger Ziniandlulu titled “Khao Sok National Park – jungle time” Ziniandlulu’s travel blog entry: “We arrived in Khao Sok by minivan and after the usual drop-off-at-a-hotel-away-from-town scam, made our way to Art’s Riverview Lodge. Their logo is “the best place for nature lovers” and this turned out to be quite true. The Lodge was at the very end of a narrow lane leading away from the main road to the Khao Sok National Park entrance. The main building of the lodge is set on the edge of a river and faces a huge tree-covered karst cliff. Spaced apart and set amidst jungle are a group of wooded bungalows. During the daytime the dentist-drill sound of the cicadas is deafening and in the distance strange hooping calls can be heard. During the afternoon, macaques come down from the cliff, cross the river and play in the trees of the Lodge grounds, while also attempting to burgle the bungalows. A couple of guests were walking down the pathway on the day we arrived and one of the macaques noticed that they had a plastic bag with bananas in them. In the ensuing chaos, the bag was torn apart and the bananas were fought over by a huge number of monkeys that appeared as if from nowhere. It was quite a spectacle and we were entranced by the antics of the macaques. Our cabin was also set by the river but was cheaper, older and a considerable distance away from the main lodge at the end of a long
