Red Harvester Ants are found in the south western US. There are 22 species of harvester ants in the United States. Worker ants can give a painful, stinging bite, but are generally reluctant to attack. Effects of the bite can spread along lymph channels and can be medically serious. Harvester ant workers commonly are sold for ant farms. This video is of the worker ants outside their nest next to a fence post along the trail which borders the Virgin River in Zion. Most campers don’t seem to have a problem with the ants and few ant bites are reported in Zion BUT the #1 question from new campers is why are there so many ants and do they bite? The fact is, we are the ones who are everywhere as the ants go about their daily lives amid all the campers and hikers in Zion.
